Windmill Water Pumping Supplies Good Clean Water
Independent Project funded by the Chigneto Agro-Conservation Club and Ducks Unlimited. Conservation club monies were provided by NB Environmental Trust Fund and the NB Wildlife Trust Fund. Other partners who participated in this project.
A partnership project between farmers and environmental officials was created to devise a system that could provide clean, safe drinking water for livestock and at the same time create an environment friendly habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife.
"Good clean water is as good as good green grass," said Doug Trenholm as he watched the first stream of water fill up his 300 gallon, concrete trough. In this particular pasture, this farmer's 30 head of cattle used to walk down to the bank of La Coupe River to quench their thirst, along with the 30 or so other small calves following behind them. However, now their water is being pumped from a manmade pond by a Koenders Windmill that quickly erected.
Before the end of the summer there will be fifteen windmills put up in the community to water the livestock. The first windmill was erected way back in the summer of 2000.
John Wile, a habitat biologist with Ducks Unlimited says that the project has certainly won over a lot of friends in the livestock community. Among the greatest benefits to the farming community, he states, is that now their cattle have safe access to clean drinking water. They no longer have to scale steep embankments or wade up to their bellies in mud to get a drink of water.
John Wile also pointed out several studies proving that good quality drinking water will contribute significantly to efficient weight gain of beef cattle.
When the 300 gallon trough gets full of clean water its overflow simply goes back into the spring-spring fed pond.
Up to this point the windmills were only used to aerate water to keep the pond water clean. Now adding the pumps was a whole new use for the windmill systems. So these windmills have more than one purpose in the Maritimes. Keeping the water clean and protecting the natural habitat along with pumping water up to ensure that the cattle remain hydrated in a safe drinking environment.
It's a benefit to the wildlife and to the farmers – a true win/win.
